Green Chalice Ministry

The purpose of the Green Chalice Program is to encourage and assist local congregations/DOC Offices and Assemblies who wish to live out their faith by caring for creation. This program is designed to recognize congregations for being good stewards of God’s creation. It also aims to empower congregations/assemblies with ideas and resources to enable them to walk gently on the earth.

As part of our commitment to become a Green Chalice congregation, we continue to provide you with ways we can live more lightly on the Earth and lower our individual carbon footprints.  As we move into the months of summer and the time of vacations for many, it is important to remember that there is no vacation from living lightly on the Earth.  You are encouraged to take this first month of summer to involve yourself more deeply in the activism that is needed if we truly are to be good stewards of the Earth as our Creator has commanded.  So this month here is a list and description of several very reputable organizations that you might consider in which to get involved.  Enjoy exploring their websites and finding out more about how they are working tirelessly to protect and enhance the Earth.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF)

The World Wildlife Fund is perhaps one of the best-known organizations for the protection of endangered species and their habitats around the world. They have been around for over 45 years and their goal is to conserve 19 of the world’s most important natural places by 2010. They focus on several campaigns to make sure that they are making the biggest impact that they can. Currently, the WWF is urging its members to help lions and snow leopards, choose good wood and save forests, and eat sustainable seafood. Their website is www. worldwildlife.org.

Greenpeace International

The members of this environmental organization have been fighting for the preservation of the earth since 1971.They pride themselves on their method of “bearing witness” to environmental crimes in a non-violent manner, and although some people find them annoying, they have done a lot of good in the world. They are best known for their protests on ships. They support ocean conservation, climate change prevention, forest preservation, and the protection of endangered species. Their website is www.greenpeace.org.
