New at Disciples in 2009

A Service of Memories

Remembering those we miss at Christmas

Advent is the season of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love and the anticipation of the celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.   The weeks leading up to Christmas can also be a time when loss and depression make celebrating difficult.   Because a church community celebrates together while also sharing sorrows, in December of 2009, for the first time, we joined together for a special worship time in the sanctuary.  It was a small service, quiet and reflective, with candles, music, prayers, and communion.

We gathered in support of those who might be:

facing a first Christmas without someone dear

            unemployed

struggling with depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder

new to the community or away from family

struggling with personal health concerns or in their
                    extended family

            newly separated or divorced

            financially strapped

            struggling with an addiction

standing in support of those who are sad at Christmastime.

By the light of the Advent Wreath that represents Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love, we added a light of Healing -- the healing that can come from being together in community worship among our brothers and sisters trusting in Christ’s hope and promise of a new day.

Child care was available for those who need it.

This Service of Memories will now be an annual time of worship.
